Tracking America's Electronic Waste

PBS NewsHour x EarthFix

After this story published, environmental authorities in Hong Kong, Washington state and Oregon launched investigations into e-waste recycling practices. Prison sentences were handed down to two Seattle business owners, whose material we discovered in rural Hong Kong during our reporting there. Their story features more prominently in our local and international radio stories, online multimedia content and a long-form written story.

I co-produced this investigative package with Katie Campbell. We also oversaw contributions from other producers and editors that included data journalists, web designers, and reporting partners in Hong Kong. It was nominated for best explanatory reporting at the Online News Association's 2016 OJA ceremony and earned an Emmy (Pacific Northwest) for public affairs reporting.
