Justicia Para Vicky

Client: Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation

I contributed to this story for the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation, an effort to raise awareness for the case of Vicky Hernandez, a trans woman murdered by authorities during the 2009 Honduran coup d'etat. It was one murder amid a spike in gender-motivated killings of trans people that followed the new regime's takeover. Vicky's case, brought before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights by the RFK Foundation and other groups, became a landmark ruling in human rights law: The court held the state of Honduras responsible for Vicky's death and mandated reparations to her family.
